Here at University Dental Group, we are dedicated to providing top-notch treatment and prevention of periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease is the result of a buildup of plaque and tartar that remains on the teeth. This tartar breeds bacteria that attack the bone and gums that support the teeth. Periodontal disease is the number one reason for tooth loss.
We perform periodontal exams as part of your regular dental checkup. A small dental instrument, known as a periodontal probe, is used to measure the pocket of space (sulcus) between the tooth and gum. The depth of a healthy sulcus measures three millimeters or less. Pockets will get deeper as periodontal disease progresses. Your dentist will also consider other factors, such as the amount of bleeding, inflammation and tooth mobility, to make a diagnosis of periodontitis. Treatments for periodontal disease will depend on the severity of the disease.
Practicing good hygiene habits at home is an important part of maintaining good oral health and preventing tooth or bone loss. Your dentist will discuss any areas of improvement during your visit. You can feel confident knowing that we are caring for your whole mouth at every visit.
